How to Check Shutter Counts or Actuations on Canon EOS, Nikon or Other DSLR Cameras?

Few days back, when I tried to sell my DSLR, each and every potential buyer asked me one common question. What is the shutter counts or actuation of the camera? Well, it was not surprising at all. The shutter counts or the actuation is like the mileage of a camera. Each and every camera shutter has it’s own shutter durability cycles. When a manufacturer say’s the camera shutter is tested for 150,000 cycle. Means the camera shutter good for at least 150,000 shutter clicks. usually they last much longer.

How to find out  Canon DSLR’s shutter actuations?

For Nikon/Pentax/ Others DSLRs

Some cameras like Nikon & Pentax DSLRs store this data inside their exif file, which is easy to find out. Simply upload your image (jpeg/RAW) file here

For Canon EOS DSLRs

Canon DSLRs store this data differently. In that case you need to use a simple and easy software called EOS info by AstroJargon. I personally tried it on my Canon 5D Mark II & worked nicely. It is absolutely free, but you can donate if you like. It will motivate him to continue the project. It’s very easy to use, all you need is to download and install it. Then connect your camera to your computer, switch it on and required info will be displayed instantly. Currently it supports  only the Canon DSLRs with DIGIC III/IV DSLRs *except* the 1D* series. Means it will work on EOS 40D, EOS 50D, EOS 450D, EOS 1000D and EOS 5D mark II. Also try EOSCounts

Why do i need it?

It helps to assess the longevity of a camera.  For example, Canon EOS 5D Mark III‘s shutter durability is 150,000 cycles and you are planning to buy an used 5D3 with 50000 total shutter counts on it. Means the camera still has 100,000 cycles left before it starts to loose its shutter’s efficiency. Very useful when you are planing to buy or sell an used camera or simply, you just wanna know!
